Making People Dump You on Social Media

Recently, I have been getting frustrated with LinkedIn. I seem to be getting more and more “sales pitches” and “information overload.” This is mostly coming from people I don’t know very well or have only known a short while on LinkedIn—sometimes less than five minutes! I have asked around and others are feeling the same.

In our discussions, we came up with The Top Five Ways to Get People to Dump You on LinkedIn (but this can pretty much apply to any social media platform). Here are the steps to complete if you want to get dumped.

1.Be sure to ask people with whom you are connected, but barely know, to connect you or introduce you to their friends.

2. Spam your connections! As soon as they accept your invitation (or any time after that), start sending them information they never requested. Send them offers, “knowledge” and “insider info.”

3. Speak badly, or bash people or businesses online!

4. Ask those same folks you barely know to endorse you for your skills (that they probably know nothing about!).

5. Ask people with whom you are connected and that you hardly know to help you with your job search just because they work for, or are associated with, a company you are applying to or want to apply to!

LinkedIn, or any social media, is based on trust. When you breach that trust, you get “deleted.” To manage LinkedIn properly, you need to understand that it is a relationship network. Just like sponsorships, it takes time to develop the relationship and it needs to be nurtured. When that is done, it is a huge success. I have been blessed with a terrific LinkedIn network that has helped me enormously over the years, but I need to make sure that the folks I described above are removed from my system.
