It has been another busy and exciting
quarter for us here at the Partnership Group -
Sponsorship Specialists. In addition to the
acquisition of new clients to serve, combined with
renewals of past clients and delivering on services, our
core team of seven dedicated professionals are
working hard!
The Partnership Group -
Sponsorship Specialists is proud to be
recognized by Imagine Canada as an
Imagine Caring Company. Be sure to
notice the recognition at the top of the newsletter and
in the future on many of the communications pieces of
our company. We are proud to receive this designation
and encourage others to learn more about Imagine
Canada and their programs.
In addition to the ongoing daily
services we provide to clients we are in the final
stages of developing the detailed outline and program
for the One Day Sponsorship Workshops
being held in April across Western Canada. (These are
almost sold out so be sure to register now for the early
bird discount. See the article below for details.) As
well our team has confirmed the dates and location for
the annually sold out October event - Western
Sponsorship Congress and we are at this time
finalizing speakers and presenters. (See the call for
speakers article in the blue column to the right and
details on the dates and location in the article
below.)
The sponsorship industry has been
booming this past while with a recent Canada
Post survey projecting growth in our $1.1
billion industry to climb by about 12% this coming year.
These are staggering numbers! But when we look at the
growth of the number of non profits, charities, member
based associations and professional and amateur sport
organizations we are working for (and requesting our
services) combined with the growth in our corporate
services business, these projections are in line!
More and more businesses,
corporations and sponsors are seeking our services to
assist them in the measurement of their sponsorship
programs as well as providing them with the tools and
systems to be able to select sponsorships appropriately
(and determine real market value on
their opportunities). They are all looking for
better ROI (return on investment) and the new "buzz
word", ROO or "return on opportunity"
which is a very accurate approach to measuring success
in sponsorship. We are excited to be able to provide
these services to sponsors across the country.
Also please note an exciting addition to
this quarter's newsletter is the inclusion of "guest
contributors" to our "Sponsorship Tips"
section. This month we are proud to include two
sponsorship "tips" articles written by other industry
professionals. If you have a tip or article you would
like published to our 6000 or so subscribers, please let
us know. Enjoy this quarter's newsletter and as always
we look forward to your feedback.

Calgary Sport Council Delivers More
Sponsorship Training
The Partnership Group is proud to have
been selected as the organization to deliver
sponsorship training sessions to the members of the
Calgary Sport Council. Each year, the Council engages
professionals to deliver training and developmental
workshops for their members (and non members) in areas
of fundraising, coaching, elite athlete development and
so on.
Initially
one session was scheduled for Saturday March 1,
2008 from 9 am to noon at Varsity Community Centre. This
workshop is still a go!!
Since our last newsletter two
additional workshops have been scheduled.
On March 1, 2008, the
Partnership Group will deliver a session
on sponsorship by the name of "Sponsorship -
A fundraising Tool: What Is It and How Can It Assist
You". This is an overview workshop defining
sponsorship, understanding what it really is and how it
can help your organization to generate substantial
additional bottom line revenue. It will appeal to
all Calgary Sport Council members (and non members) who
may hold fundraising events such as galas, golf
tournaments, runs/walks etc., look for team or league
sponsors and such. If you are involved in sponsorship,
this is a session you will want to attend. This will be
an excellent session for staff (fund development,
communications, marketing and Executive Directors) and
Board / Committee Members involved in fund
development.
The session will provide an overview and review
of the following topic areas:
- Defining sponsorship versus philanthropy
- Why sponsors may be important to your organization
and the need to understand it better
- What is new in sponsorship, tends and industry
examples
- Specific discussions of the organizations
attending and their sponsorship programs
On Saturday April 5, 2008 from 9
am to noon at the Talisman Centre, the Partnership Group
will deliver a session entitled "Sponsorship - A
Fundraising Tool: How to Determine What You Have To
Sell". This session will provide participants with
the tools and ability to determine what they have within
their organizations (tangible and intangible) that is
worth "selling" in a sponsorship package. It will
specifically focus on building this "inventory" of
benefits and assets.
On Saturday May 3, 2008
from 9 am to noon at the Talisman Centre, the
Partnership Group will deliver a session entitled
"Sponsorship - A fundraising Tool: How to Value
What You Have To Sell". This workshop will build
on the learning from the previous two workshops, though
attendance at the initial two sessions is not a
prerequisite to attend. It will assist organizations to
determine how to place real free market values on their
assets and benefits so to be able to present proposals
that demonstrate real market values and build integrity
and ethics into your sponsorship programs.

Council or to register for the workshop please click on

Municipal Governments Forging
Ahead With Sponsorship
Reviews
The time has come for Canadian municipalities
to review their own sponsorship opportunities. With tax
rates escalating and local businesses and land owners
continuing to cry foul, municipalities large and small,
are seeking alternate revenue sources.
Over three years ago, mandated by City Council, the
City of Oshawa developed a professional sponsorship
program as an alternate revenue base. From park namings
to access, from logo inclusions to intangible
opportunities, from key marketing and branding benefits
to business opportunities, sponsorship is ripe within
municipalities. Oshawa has lead this route and done very
well at it.
It is encouraging to see other municipalities
follow the same route. The City of Edmonton recently
engaged Judy Haber and her company Performance
Sponsorship Group, to undertake the audit and
valuation of a single property for sponsorship
opportunities. The City of Calgary is on its second
rounds of RFPs to find the right organizations to assist
them in their sponsorship audit and sales. And even as
this newsletter goes to publication, the City of
Winnipeg is entertaining submissions for assistance.
Sponsorship is big business. Municipalities have
the inventory of benefits and assets at their
fingertips. Most though are not in the "sponsorship
business" nor do they have the capacity to deliver such
extensive and thorough audits, valuations, package
development and in some cases sales. The Partnership
Group is one of Canada's leading suppliers of such
services and a provider of such services to projects in
the City of Leduc, the 2005 Canada Summer Games in the
City of Regina, Calgary Tourism and others, is excited
about the growth of sponsorship to those municipalities
who have begun to see the revenue growth
opportunities. |

SPONSORSHIP TIPS
Philanthropy versus Sponsorship - A
Commentary
The following article was written by David Finch,
Managing Director of Connect Strategy Group
and Ross Marsh, Principal at Ross W. Marsh &
Associates. It also appeared in a recent
publication of SportDecision
One of the interesting debates in the marketing world
today is; what is the difference between corporate
philanthropy and corporate sponsorship. Or more
importantly, does it matter?
To
start, a gift, in the context of philanthropy as defined by
the Canadian Revenue Agency, is a voluntary transfer of
property without valuable consideration to the donor. The
maximum benefit to the donor is 10% or the total gift to a
maximum of $75. In contrast, sponsorship is fees paid
that are not gifts because the sponsor receives something in
exchange (such as promotion).
This distinction used to be very black and white.
Historically, corporate philanthropy would be managed by the
community investment departments or corporate foundations and
were benevolent in nature. In contrast, sponsorship
would be the responsibility of the marketing departments and
the objectives directly linked to marketing goals - ranging
from brand to promotion to hosting. But increasingly
this line has blurred as marketing departments have assumed
responsibility for philanthropy and begin to assess how they
can leverage these investments to drive objectives.
A
recent 2007 Supreme Court of Canada
decision has contributed
significantly to this debate in the world of sports. In
determining sports organizations cannot be registered
charities it stated; "The potential recognition of
nonprofit sport and recreation organizations as charities is
closer to a wholesale reform than incremental change and while
it may be desirable as a matter of policy to give sports
associations the tax advantage of charitable status, it is a
task better suited to Parliament than the
courts." In other words, corporate
philanthropy for sports organizations (with the benefit of a
charitable tax receipt) today is a non-starter.
Therefore in the world of sports in Canada - it is
essentially all sponsorship. Accordingly, you need to
understand the motivators of your corporate partners and be in
a position to deliver benefits. Recent research makes
clear that the days of corporations donating to your
non-profit sports organization just to be "nice" are
dwindling. Though it is still happening in some cases,
to be competitive in the contest to receive financial support,
recipient organizations gain the advantage when they are able
to articulate a measurable benefit. The benefits may be overt
in the context of a title sponsorship or they may be more
subtle in the form of a gift to support a cause important to a
large customer. The bottom-line is there always needs to be
clearly defined benefits to your corporate partners, even if
their motive is still largely philanthropic.
Calgary-based Provident Energy Trustis an interesting
case study of a company that has chosen sports as one of the
mediums to build their reputation. Provident invests
about $1M each year though sponsorship, community investment
and philanthropy but their objective is not to be a household
name. Rather, as an energy trust, their key external
audiences are local stakeholders in the communities where they
do business. Company employees are another key
audience.
Given this focus, Provident recently has invested
$500,000 to support the redevelopment of a sport and
recreation centre in Redwater, Alberta (population 2172).
"This investment was an
easy business decision for us," says Tom Buchanan, President
and CEO. "We are
the largest employer in Redwater and it's important for us to
demonstrate this commitment in a meaningful way to the
community." However, Buchanan emphasizes that
Provident's investment was not simply philanthropy, as the
partnership secured long-term naming rights to the
facility.
As
non-profit sports organization, the Supreme Court has decided
there is no such thing as a "gift". So when it
comes to your corporate partners, focus at understanding their
goals and motivators - then clearly articulate these
benefits. If you do this well, you may be surprised by
how many others partners find themselves in a giving
mood.

diverse but accommodating areas or for more

Everyone is a Running Shoe...
The Who, What and How of Building Your
Brand..Simply!
This article was written by David Finch, Managing
Director of Connect Strategies Group. It was
recently also published in
SportDecision.
I
am often told by non-consumer product organizations, ranging
from small not-for-profits to multi-billion dollar resource
companies, "we don't
really have a brand." In other words, we don't
sell a consumer product like Nike or
Coke so brand
isn't a priority. My response is the same every time I hear
this: Everyone is a
Running Shoe.
A
brand is perception and perception is reality. So whether it
is your personal reputation or the reputation of your
organization - perception is everything on the road to
achieving your goals.
It's
About the "Who" The only difference between a massive consumer brand
and your organization is the audience. This is where your
discussion should start and finish. GM spends $4
billion a year on advertising. The bad news is that you likely
don't have $4 billion. The good news is you don't need it.
What you really care about is the "who." Who do you
want to build your brand and reputation with? Who matters to
your success in the short, medium and long-term? Is it your
employees? Is it your community leaders? Is it your business
partners? Is it your sponsors? What do they look like and what
are their passions? In summary, (1) identify the audiences
that will make a difference to your business, and (2) keep it
simple and segmented in a manner that is actionable when you
start looking at the "how".
It's
About the "What" So
now that you have identified the "who," you need to
think about the "what" - what do you
want people to think about your organization? This is your
running shoe. What simple key messaging do you want the
"who" to
remember? What makes you different? Why would the "who" care about you?
This is not the headline or copy of an ad. Rather it is the
stable foundation of your organization and the best thing is
you already probably know it - now you just have to articulate
it in a meaningful way for the "who".
It's
About the "How" The "how" is bringing the
"who" and
"what" to
life. It's tactical but vital. It's not $4 billion and maybe
it's free. Knowing the "who" is vital to the
"how". What
do they do? How do they do it? Where do they live? Where do
they go? What do they read? The answers to these questions
will allow you to start to formulate the beginnings of a
strategic communications plan that will connect the "who" and the
"what".
This does not have to be a complex process that involves media
planners and an expensive agency. However, what it will
require is some creativity and innovation to allow your
"what" to
stand out to the "who". The message
(your brand) has to be genuine, meaningful, timely and
targeted.
In an
earlier article, I referred to the success Esso had in
revitalizing its grassroots minor hockey Medals of Achievement
Program. This is a wonderful simple case study of connecting
the "whos"
to the "whats". The 30%
spike Esso saw in the participation in this program in one
year was largely rooted in analyzing the "whos". Who was
participating in the program today and how do we find more of
them? This analysis demonstrated that participation was driven
largely by the size of the community. Consequently, when Esso
redirected its marketing efforts at these "sweet spot"
communities, the demand proved overwhelming.
Remember, regardless of whether you represent a
not-for-profit organization, a sport's governing body or a
widget manufacturer, take your brand seriously because at the
end of the day - everyone is a running shoe. Now just do
it.

CONGRATULATIONS ROTARY CLUB OF CALGARY
WEST

What a wonderful way to say "I am thinking of
you"! Each year on Valentines Day, over 100 volunteer
drivers and navigators take the streets of Calgary to
deliver strawberry shortcakes on behalf of the people that
ordered the shortcakes.
This past year, this fundraising project of
the Rotary Club of Calgary West exceeded all
expectations and sold 7475 shortcakes. Individuals
thinking of loved ones, companies thinking of their
staff, other companies thinking of their clients, all
combined they ordered over 7475 shortcakes that were delivered
by the volunteers on Valentines Day 2008!
These volunteers were family and
friends of the Lions, Rotary Club of Calgary West, Rotary Club
of Calgary Sarcee and other supporters.
This would never have been possible without the
support of the all important sponsors. Leading the way and
preparing all the shortcakes as a sponsor is
Calgary CO-OP. The thousands of phone
calls, inquiries and orders are handled by TIGERTEL
UTR, the communications sponsor. And logistics and
routing of delivery packages for the volunteers is all
done by Stampede Messenger and Express.
Thanks to these sponsors and the many others as well as the
volunteers and those that ordered the
shortcakes! This is truly a collaborative effort.

Shortcake Project and the Rotary Club of Calgary

conjunction with Ross W Marsh &
Associates is excited about the foreseeable
opportunity for sponsorship with South Fish Creek
Recreation Association. For the past several months,
the Partnership Group has worked closely with
the Calgary community based area to assist them in developing
and delivering real market valuation to their inventory of
assets.
The inventory is now complete and stock template
packages are being developed for customized sponsorship
presentations.
South Fish Creek Recreation
Association is located in the fast developing and
rapidly growing SW quadrant of the city. This project will
expand the facility from 2 to 4 sheets of ice. In addition
these arenas are housed in a complex with the YMCA, a City of
Calgary Public Library and a high school. What a great project
and the Partnership Group is proud to be part
of this sponsorship development plan.
