Serenity

Serenity

It is important to be able to have serenity. The dictionary defines serenity as the state of being calm, peaceful and untroubled.  I most often search for serenity when there are issues or chaos or conflict. These may occur when I have procrastinated on a project, and I am up against a deadline. Or when we are negotiating a deal, or a client does not see the same future as we are projecting. Or when something goes dreadfully wrong in an activation, or someone has not lived up to my expectations and it is affecting an outcome for a client or staff.

So, when I look at how do I gain or regain serenity amongst all these issues there are several approaches. My wife meditates and goes for walks on the beach to gain serenity. I have friends who extricate themselves from the situation for a period of time and then come back to re-address it. For me, it is finding a solution or understanding what the solution is not. I often recite the serenity prayer to get started. (It is not so much as a prayer or mediation as it is a “refresher” or reminder to reset my position or foundation.)

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change. The courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.

For me it is important to know what is outside the bounds of me altering. If the speaker did not arrive or the products for sampling were spoiled or the banner got ripped, I need to understand that those are now out of my control. I personally need to acknowledge that. Then I look to what can I do. What are the alternatives. How can I make this better or alter the situation? What can I do versus focusing on the things that I cannot affect or change?

Once I know how I can affect change with and how I cannot… then I can go to work to solve the problem. And that is when I can gain my serenity. The problem does not go away, but serenity is granted to me when I have a plan based on what I can control.

Someone once said to me “Serenity s not the absence of conflict, but the ability to cope with it”. It is from that that I try to maintain my serenity!
