FOMO vs JOMO

FOMO vs JOMO

OK… so we all know what FOMO means… “fear of missing out”. We have probably all experienced it. You know… that anxious or uneasy feeling you get when you believe others are having rewarding, fun, or profitable experiences without you! Whether that is a community social function you need to be at (in your mind) or a work event or Gala or awards show etc. We too often let FOMO take us over. The self-inflicted pain often is created by absolute stupidity in the lengths we go to arranging shift changes, moving of meetings, getting sitters etc. just to attend something to ensure someone else is not getting all the opportunities and we are not. Ugh… we are a crazy lot.

Today I am working on a premise of JOMO more and more. No that does not mean I avoid events and opportunities, it just means I try to find the joy if I cannot attend something or better yet, choose not to attend something. JOMO… the Joy of Missing Out! It is the psychological and emotional practice of finding contentment, peace, and fulfillment in opting out of social events, trends, or digital distractions in order to prioritize your own well- being. When there is something that I would really like to attend but cannot… I try and look for the joy in it. I don’t get stressed or anxious and make my body and mind unhealthy as a result if I cannot attend or just choose not to attend. Perhaps it is more time with family, or getting caught up on work or just binging on Netflix for an evening (ok.. that one is not so healthy… but sometimes needed). So, for instance, I am no longer on Instagram or Facebook or X. (I have not opted out… but I have deleted my access to them. I used to log into those accounts a couple of times a day… I have not opened any of them for 5 months. Guess what… I have not missed out on anything and the time away from them is joyful!

I urge you to try it. Find joy in missing out instead of fear. Tell me how it goes… I am interested.
