Canada Games Security Levels Questioned

As reported in the Halifax Chronicle Journal this morning, the CEO of the Canada Winter Games in Halifax was defending security preparations on the eve of the opening ceremonies. Chris Morrissey confirmed Thursday that Dave Worrell, co-head of security for the Games, has resigned over concerns there is not enough security for the two-week event that opens today.

“Unfortunately, there’s a difference of opinion,” Morrissey said in an interview. Morrissey said the number of security staff for the Halifax Games is “very close” to that of previous Games and it will be a safe environment for all athletes and spectators.

Worrell, a Halifax police sergeant, told Global News that he resigned because he is uncomfortable with what he called significant cuts to the original security plan. Worrell told Global the Games only has 20 per cent of the security staff needed to oversee the event and there is a shortage of cell phones, cars and other equipment.

These are just one person’s thoughts.
